Paa Review

The story of Amitabh Bachchan’s movie ‘Paa’ is about a boy of 13 years whose name is Auro. He has a rare genetic defect. He is suffering from progeria like disease which causes speed up ageing. Due to this disease, Auro is looking 5 times older than his real age of 13 years. But he doesn’t take it on heart and live like a happy child. Abhishek Bachchan is playin g the role of Auro in this movie. He is a politician. Auro’s mother (Vidhya Balan) is a gynecologist.  [smartads]

Paa is the emotional movie shows the emotions of parent of a different child having disease of speed up aging. Now suspense is that will Auro live a normal life and will it be normal?

Music Review of Paa :

Music is composed by Illaiyaraja for the movie. Following are the List of Songs of Paa movie.

  • Mudhi Mudhi Ittefaq Se sung by Shilpa Rao
  • Gumm Summ Gumm by R. Bavatharini
  • Udhi Udhi Ittefaq Se by Shilpa Rao
  • Hichki Hichki by Sunidhi Chauhan
  • Gali Mudhi Ittefaq Se by Shaan
  • Halke Se Bole by Chorus
  • Mere Paa by Amitabh Bachchan

All songs are nice but Illaiyaraja was not able to impress with the music. One or two songs came out good. All othes are just average. If you want to write your own Paa music review then use the comment section below.

Ilaiyaaraja cancelled the music launch of Paa movie that was supposed to launch at a function that was supposed to release on Children’s Day.

  2. crazy_kiran says:

ilayaraja delivers great for new hindi songs…be it AE ZINDAGI from sadma , DHEEMI DHEEMI from shiva or MUDI MUDI for paa…but these directors are the one who is asking him to re use some hardcore south songs of his old movies…so the output sounds peculiar…dont blame him…

on repeated listenings all songs are good , maybe with movie things shud be more fine

  3. Arvind says:

The music is very apt for the story..
The music brings out the feel of the movie..
This is how a film score should be..
The Mudi mudi song and the slow version is just mind blowing..Mere paa song portrays the character of the auro character completely through music..
U cannot expect a score that is apart from the feel of the film from Ilaiyaraaja..Thats not his type of music..
When u see with the movie u can understand the feel of the score..

  4. sanjiv anand says:

There is a 1996 movie, “Jack” on the same concept that was directed by Francis Ford Coppola. Robin Williams gave a brilliant performance.

  5. Here is my take on the music of Paa:
Whatever be one’s status.. Whatever be one’s knowledge, whatever be one’s writing skills.. certain things in Life cannot be explained..

For the last 24 hours, I am in a state of trance. Why?

I started listening to ‘Paa’.. and I am unable to get out of it.
Feelings that are very special and …(pl. read the first line again!).

What I am going to do now is to write very briefly (in just one or two lines) about each song.

The album has 7 songs and one theme music bit.
Out of the 7 songs, 3 are different versions of the same song, 3 are rehashed versions of his old tunes and 1 is a complete song (so complete that it fills one’s heart to the brim!).

Now, I know there are people who say ‘Why does he repeat his old tunes? Can he not give something new?’

I request such skeptics to understand the film world better.
Balki is a self-proclaimed fanatic of ILaiyaraaja. When he was in the ad world, he used(stole?) his tunes in many of the ads.One striking example is the IDEA cellular(incidentally Abhishek Bachchan is the model!) ad where the Pallavi Anupallavi tune is used with so many variations.

In a recent interview, he has said that ‘There is no composer in India who can match this gentleman. But unfortunately, half the country do not know the existence of this person’.

His objective is very clear. He wants to promote Raaja sir’s tunes in the country(no matter if they are old).He wants the entire Nation to listen to such tunes and wonder who has composed such magical tunes.

I was indeed taken aback in 2007 when I came to know that all tunes in ‘Cheeni Kum’ were his old tunes. But the moment I listened to the songs in the new avatar, I could not hide my surprise and happiness. Surprise-because of the orchestration and arrangement. Happy because they sounded great.’Jothayalli’ transformed as ‘Jaane do na’ , ‘Mandram Vandha’ as ‘Cheeni Kum hai’..
    What an amazing transformation!

The same has happened in ‘Paa’.

My only grouse with ‘Cheeni kum’ was that no song was picturised in full.Hope Mr.Balki makes amends in Paa.

One striking difference is the quality of lyrics. It was below average in Cheeni Kum and this coupled with the reason that no song was available fully as a video ensured that the songs were not a great hit in the North (compared to the south). But the lyrics(Swanand Kirkire) are wonderful in Paa.

Let us look at the songs briefly.

Raaja sir’s fascination for Mohanam ragam is well-known.
It continues here except that it gives the flavour of Bhoop-the Hindustani counterpart of Mohanam.

The song ‘Mudi Mudi’ has three versions-two sung by Shilpa Rao ‘Udi Udi’ and ‘Mudi Mudi’-and the male version sung by Shaan.

The male version is soft and has a unique charm.

Though ‘Udi Udi’ and ‘Mudi Mudi’ follow the same tune, the two differ in the preludes, and the interlude. The whisper in ‘Mudi Mudi’ is amazing.
The former has the dominant piano while the latter has the bass guitar(though one hears the subtle piano in the latter as well!)

The Shaan version is slow without any percussion- a la ‘Azhage Unnai Aaaradanai seigiren’.The symphony like interlude is wonderful(somehow I am reminded of ‘Kaadhal oviyam’ song).

‘Halke Se Bole’ is the familiar ‘Puththam puthu Kaalai’ tune-one of my all time favourites. The almost similar rhythmic pattern gives me nostalgic feelings.

‘Kaapi’ is one ragam that has been adapted in Carnatic from Hindustani but the Carnatic Kaapi is different from the Hindustani one.Hindustani Kafi is nothing but the Carnatic Karaharapriya and Pilu can at best be compared with Carnatic Kaapi.

No other film music composer has used Kaapi as wonderfully as ILaiyaraaja.

His most famous tune in Kaapi is actually 27 years old.It first appeared as a BGM bit in ‘Moondram PiRai’ way back in 1982.It was then used in OLangaL, Auto Raja, Nireekshana, Kanne Kalai Maane, Aur Ek prem Kahani, and the for his ‘Live in Italy’ prog.
One never gets tired of listening to this tune in so many versions as each version shows a new dimension to Kaapi.

In ‘Gum Shum Gum’, we get to hear the western contours in the second interlude.
    Marvellous work!

‘Kaattu Vazhi Kaal Nadiya’ has always been one of my personal favourites. This tune-mainly the interlude- is the theme music of Paa.Amitabh does magic here singing like a 13 year old. Brings tears to even a stone!

What happens when hiccups sound musical?
‘Hichki Hichki’(Hichki in hindi-hiccup) is a composition analysis of which would take pages.
This song, according to me is the piece de resistance (though other songs are also great).
Based on Keeravani, it follows the 7-beat Misram and is sung with consummate ease by Sunidhi Chauhan(wonder how many takes she took!In any case, it is not an easy song to sing).

Laya Raja and Raga Raja are in full flow here.

Laya Raja:One hears the normal ‘ta ki ta ta ka dhi mi’ in bass guitar along with the vocals. But what happens after that is a marvel and is possible only by the Maestro.
Misram is played in the fast pace (mel kaalam) and we hear 3, 6, 6 and 6-21beats in the percussion during the brief pause.

Raga Raja:In the second interlude, the theme music is played first in Keeravani(minor scale) and then in Shankarabharanam(major scale).Sheer magic!
The use of alien notes (sound like vivadi to me, have to listen more) and the sound of ‘hiccups’ carry the Raaja stamp!

I am unable to get out of the musical ‘hiccups’.

ILaiyaraaja- The ‘Paa’ and ‘Maa’ of Indian Film music!

  6. Karthik says:

The tune of Mudi Mudi (and all other versions) is something which only IR can produce. A continuous wave like flow. The way charanam blends back to pallavi is brilliant! The way instruments are used largely differentiates each version

Gum Sum Gum, really a different dimension to that song. Great guitar and piano works!

Halk Ke Se Bole – Again I am stuck how come that tune beautiful got fit in this children chorus

Hichki Hichki – Sheer Brilliance of Ilayaraja. Who else can compose such a complex rhythmic pattern song which appears simple

Paa Song – “Full Lights On :D ” Kudos to Amitabh. This song should be the crowd puller.

Paa Theme – Grand orchestration! Have you guys ever heard these kind of music? I hope now you will stop saying Ilayaraja is some south Indian folk music composer. Should I mention whom I am referring as ‘you’?

A wonderful album by Ilayaraja! Wishing the movie a great success!

  7. Kalpana says:

Same thing is happening wid me for de past one hour as de above person said…just now started with it…..

Even until yesterday i was listening to these remade songs in tamil but how is that it brings goosebumps when i listen it in hindi again….well….thats the legend called Ilayaraja….”The Isaikadavul”….IR rockz

  8. Music buff says:

The album is rocking…great soulful songs from great person..when film releases you can see the background music which will be ultimate and brings the character the life in the film. thats raja sir…man your rocking!!!!

  9. Mandoo Raj says:

Paa songs are great to hear..My favorite song from the album is “Gumshum Gum”..

You people may not know that there are already 7 versions available with the same tune… Each of them is a gem with unique orchestration..

    Hear all those versions here

8 versions of Gumshum Gum tune

  10. Nanmathiyan says:

Ilaiyaraja sir is the god of music….Don’t write stupidly like “All songs are nice but Illaiyaraja was not able to impress with the music”.How you said not able to impress with the music.Show me the good musician than raja sir.

  11. VjG says:

I just listened to the songs. Well…i am not getting any words. Only i can say is …its Superb. I just started today listening to this and i am listening to 16th time.
Not sure why the author of this article says “All songs are nice but Illaiyaraja was not able to impress with the music”. Well i think this an odd statement. Full credit goes to the Music Director.

  12. Prashant says:

The album is just a meager attempt to allure soothe-music-lovers. I did not lke the album very much. Illayraja has made wonderful tunes int he past and his present composition “PAA” has nothing much appealing. i am no ardent music analyst, but still, as a regular listener, i was not touched by the monotonous music. Only Hichki Hichki stands out. Shilpa rao is a torture and so is Mr. bachhan. BigB made a very lame attempt to showcase his talent as a 13 yr old. Taare zameen par cannot b created again. Period.
BigB is disappointing a lot these days. Aladdin arrived with humongous expectations, and was squashed at BO. I am afraid if same happens with PAA. The promos and the concept of the movie clearly shows the desperation of BigB to put himself int he category of Hrithik and AAmir, by putting on a crappy getup n makeup. I mean, Bacchans are so desperate(except for Aishwarya) to elevate each other’s status. If there was some1 else in Abhishek’s character, there cud have been more hopes. I amvery sure of my gut feeling, the movie is going to be a disaster. Bigb is sure gonna lose it. Believe me, itz gonna be alame attempt. Big B shud try to appear more authentic. And so should the music of such a sensitive flick.

  13. San says:

Hey Man Prashant . if you DON’T HAVE MUSIC SENSE JUST DON’T U COMMENT OK…

You GUYS don’t know what actual Orchestration is ?

We should be very PROUD of our Maestro and should not be making unncessary comments. If you know the depth of Music then you are Eligible to comment , not otherwise.

The ALBUM is really a Treat to music Lovers !!!

  14. anand says:

To put it in simple words there is no human born in this world to comments on negatively on IRs music. If the person who wrote doesnt have good knowledge on mucis he can keep his mouth closed.

  15. I read your article and I find it very interested. I bookmark your blog to my favourite websites.

  18. karthik says:

realy fantastic music.my eyes getting tears when i listening the songs, thanks raja sir

  19. thiru says:

Raja is music and music is Raja

  20. Jay says:

Well, Illayaraja is the king of music. I don’t think his music deserves the criticism of idiots who do not have a musical background but can simply dance for any crappily made hip hop non sense.

Paa’s music takes you back to your childhood days and you can really feel the hardwork of every single musician that has worked real hard to make you feel enchanted. Long live Raja and his music. Kudos to the entire crew for putting together a real good musical experience.

  21. Jay says:

I would like to know the musical abilities or the qualification of the author that reviewed the music of Paa. Who do you think you are?

  22. not good to give name on internet says:

i don’t understand why everyone is soo hyped up about this movie when they can see a better version named Benjamin Button as it is an american movie…btw..the movies that are sooo goood in India are copied from other countries..if you want to argue here is the perfect example dil bole haddippa is she’s the man, or gajni from the french movie…indian people cannot make good movies right now (don’t get me wrong, they have made excellent movies before, but are getting too much credit for copied movies currently) hence why the indian movies rated 5 are only rated about a 3 in america….

  24. Fahim Ahmed says:

If music can make someone spellbound , undoubtedly, it can be only by Ilayaraja.
No one, till date, has brilliantly used the ragas as he did.

  25. Amit says:

Shows the quality of this site. Will never visit again. If some one says that Monalisa painting is good but nothing great about it….what would ppl think of him!Well, thats exactly how this reviewer would be considered as.
Mr Reviewer, did you get a chance to watch the movie ?
My request to this site’s editor is:Excuse me Mr ..can you remove this post! so disgusting!

  26. kumar says:

This music of Paa is good . Ilya Raja can never be matched , even by himslef. I am a hardcore fan of him and i loved his music in southern movies , May it be his connection with the language or with people or with the music itslef in south. ofcourse you can see my stance is biased already… I definitely draw boundaries here.. This carnatic music master has hard time connecting with people in north with these expectional numbers due to thier lack of closeness to appeal to commonale.. Unless someone is really into music , it is hard to appreciate these songs by a common man… Great music copositions but not for ordinary man.. hence this music will not win the hearts of people.. I am just posing a question here , i am no where close to ctitising his music.. But i love all the original songs of ilaya raja and i am his biggest fan of all.. How can any one compare me Putham Pudhu Kaalai from Alaigal Olivathillai with Halke Se Bole … A classic turned into mediocre music , doesnt touch the heart like the original. Gumm Summ Gumm … oh my god.. i listened the song in Telugu movie , Nereeskhana ( Akaasam Ye natido).. This is till date my favourite of all time , even better than malayalam original :) .. but hmmm. Gumm summ.. dosent connect me.. atlast , Madram Vantha turned into chini kam? awww.. cant imagine amithab picturised on this song instead of Mohan.. such an agony , i would love to listen Ilaya Raja in hindi but not changing his own classics to just ordinary songs.. i appreciate R Balkis effort but hmmm.. doesnt connect me..
