Ratha Saptami (Rathasapthami) 2010 today

Ratha Saptami is falling on 22nd of this month & is regarded as one of the main & most important festival of Hindu. On this day people worship Lord Surya (Sun God) who rides a chariot driven by 7 horses. The day is also famous by the names of Magh Saptami or Magha Saptami Jayanti or Jaya Saptami, Surya Jayanti and Maha Saptami.

The day is celebrated in the month of Magh on the seven day of the bright fortnight. It is regarded as the most significant & holy Saptami day of the year. [smartads]

It was said that at the time of Mahabharata, this day was chosen by Bhishamacharya to leave his body to get ‘Moksha’. On more belief is also associated with this day, that the inclination of earth towards the sun is steepest on this festival.

The day of Radha Saptami have its significance in different parts of country. In Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu & Andhra Pradesh the day has its great value & a traditional ritual is followed there at the Tirupati Balaji Temple.

On this day devotees take bath by placing the leaves of Erukku on their heads. One more ritual is also associated with this event, that people take bath by keeping lamps on their heads.
