By Anshuman - Tuesday, March 9th, 2010 4:16 pm

Tuesday marked a milestone in the annals of the Indian democracy as the Congress government was successful in pushing the Women’s Reservation Bill through the Rajya Sabha. The Women’s reservation bill was passed with an overwhelming majority of 186-1. The Women’s reservation bill which seeks reservation of 33 % for women in the legislature will have to be further cleared by the Lok Sabha and at least seek clearance in half of the state assemblies to become a law.

Though there were a lot of disrupting activities by the members of RJD and JD(U) to stop the bill but Mrs. Sonia Gandhi told the Congress party members to get the bill passed at whatever cost may be. But now after the heated battles are over, there will be efforts on the part of Congress to soothe the ties with its disgruntled allies. The priority for the government now is to push the finance bill before March 31. [smartads]

Sonia Gandhi was at the helm of leading this significant event in the history of Indian Politics. Passing of this bill will see the empowerment of women in Indian politics to a greater number. Pushing of the Women’s reservation bill was a calculated risk by Congress as they sensed that none of the MP members wanted a mid-term election at this point of time by rejecting the finance bill.
