David Willetts has been appointed as minister of state for universities and science and holds a Cabinet rank. He will report to Lib Dem Secretary of State Vince Cable, in charge of the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS). Nicknamed ‘two brains’ for his intellectual capacities, Willets will now guide the government on its science policy. However, it is considered as a tough role given the conditions and constraints.

Willets’ appointment has been welcomed by Dr Hilary Leevers, acting director of the Campaign for Science and Engineering (CaSE). She emphasized the need for ample investment in science and engineering, and research and development; and the importance of innovation to drive forward growth.

However, it has been pointed out that in an effort to reduce the public deficit, science will have to face financial constraints from the government’s side. The Comprehensive Spending Review to be conducted later is expected to offer a clearer picture in this regard. It needs to be seen how David Willets would handle the responsibilities bestowed upon him effectively.
