Movie Review: Raavan/Raavanan/Ravanan/Ravana [Multilingual]- A magnificent masterpiece maker- Mani Ratnam has once again came up with the idea that no one else has thought of yet. After watching spectacular Rajneeti by Prakash Jha, a modern day Mahabharat, Mani is out with Ravan which can be defined as modern day Ramayan or better to say Raavanayan.

Mani has roped his characters in the movie on the same lines of Ramayan.in his movie he has an honest cop, who punishes the law breaker, an idol like Ram known as Dev in the film (Vikram). Dev has an adorable wife Raagini as chaste as Sita (Aishwarya). Honest cop’s friend in the forest reminds Hanuman (Givinda), his confidante (Nikhil Dwivedi) as Lakshman, vampish sister of villain who instigates the fight and villain is no other than Raavanan (Abhishek Bachchan) who kidnaps the cop’s wife in the revenge.

For viewer’s delight Mani has incorporated amusing visuals which is very much expected by audiences if they are going to watch a movie of such a brilliant film-maker but its narration seems to be wavering at times. Audiences expect the movie to start with all its zeal to keep up the excitement but it’s first half was not so excited and seemed to be boring at times and in the end climax also didn’t revived the thrill as anticipated.

Ravana comes with the pressure of immense expectations because of the names clinging to it. Movie buffs expects a lot from Mani-Abhishek-Aishwarya trio but this time it’s not easy to say whether they have lived up to the expectations or not.

Talking about the story it unfolds with the love story of Dev and Ragini who is a classical dancer and as exclusive as him. Love followed with marriage and a transfer to a small town called Lal Maati where law is not set by police but by Beera (Abhishek).

To bring law in the town Dev set himself to fight with Beera not hitting him directly but by knowing how, when, where and whom to mould in order to weaken Beera’s power. In the meanwhile Ramayan adapted Raavan saw kidnap of cop’s wife Raagini by Beera but the reason of her kidnap was not revealed till interval.

Dev’s hunt for his wife makes him nail for Beera. This rage between power and peace led antagonist and protagonist to the forest where battle of good vs. evil began.

Now, driving the attention towards the factors that pulled the film down one is keeping the title like Raavan and showing him as a psycho is a drawback as this name is so powerful to be outdone with anything and his psychic character mocks at the character itself. His makeup makes him and his gang very repulsive.

At the climax, viewers were expecting a lot but were left with unfulfilled desires. Beera’s sister’s role was not given the ample space to develop completely. Moreover, Raagini developing soft corner for Beera is not acceptable at all. This reflects an unsound screenplay without a doubt.

On the positive side, kidnapping of Nikhil was impressive; factors developed for prompting Beera to create chaos in Dev’s life were apt. Dev and Beera’s fight sequence on the bridge was extraordinary. Visuals in every Mani ratna’s film are exceptional and Raavan maintain that norm. Each frame deserves applaud and admiration.

Music by A.R. Rahman is also loved by all and to complement Raavan has awesome visuals. Lively choreography on the music created an altogether different impact.

Screenplay didn’t did justice with Abhishek’s efforts. In some scenes his dialogues were not rational. While Aishwarya was as pretty as realistic, Vikram and Govinda didn’t get the chance to make any difference.

Concluding the whole discussion, Raavan turned out to be huge disappointment for viewers but for business it has already attracted a whole lot of crowd because of the names attached to it.

Raavan Movie Rating – 2/5

    Hello,

I firmly disagree with the reviews of this reviewer and i believe this movie is one of the finest efforts in Indian Cinema. This is not the story of Beera[Raavan] or Dev[Ram] or Ragini[Sita], they are representatives of human nature. The focus is not on individuals and there personal history but the journey they make. Ram and raavan happens only in mythology, in reality no one can be categorized in terms of black or white but can be defined only in grey. This Movie exactly is an effort to showcase this aspect of Human Nature. Ram is not portrayed as the epitome of righteousness and raavan is neither portrayed as the canyon of wickedness. Ram and ravan sways between the opposite poles of human nature. Sita’s character shares many common aspect of general public. She at the start of this journey was entirely siding with the views of Ram but once after being with Raavan takes a softer stand towards him and his concerns and towards the end of the movie was even ready to live with him. She is the close witness along with viewer into the life of both Ram and Raavan. She along with the viewer was opinionated about Ram as well as Raavan which they will change later. Movie is not an attempt in covering the individual stories of Ram, Raavan or Sita and if it is viewed as such it won’t make much sense either. Here forest again is metaphor for life.Striking examples of Ram and Raavan can be easily identified in contemporary India. All those naxalite leaders and terrorists are easily categorized by general public is of Raavan’s nature and the our government machinery that opposes them belonging to the stands of Ram. We rarely gets an opportunity to get a glimpse into the life of ram or ravaan as closely as Sita. But the film as a contemporary version of the epic is more lenient towards Raavan because in many an occasion system is very much responsible in the creation of Raavan. Human nature is primarily good and in many occasions its the circumstances that props up the Bad in us. The movie i believe is not very successful in getting across its message to the masses but for the discerning among the audience will be hooked by its central message. As like the any other Mani Ratnam movie the technical aspects of the movie is of high class. Some the shots looks risky that you will ask,how they are made possible. All the actors should be appreciated for the difficulties that they have gone through to make this movie possible.
This is a must watch movie for anyone aspiring to have a taste of different cinema at least to encourage such efforts and i firmly believe that the movie is an achievement within the limitations of commercial cinema.
    My Rating:- 3.7/5

  3. Ritesh Sharma says:

Superb movie…Critics have been very much harsh, unfair to this excellent movie. Criticism to such a good movie looks nothing less then a conspiracy. So much powerful performances, such a beautiful and different depiction of ramayana.. well crafted..!! What more can someone ask for?

  4. Tech_Movie says:

These so-called Critics are Useless!!!! You only want to rate MASALA movies, go and mislead the mass. Give them some REAL Life pictures like this.

The cinematography & direction is one of the best in Indian Cinema.

Just sit and enjoy the sceneries. That’s more than enough.

If you expect normal Ruk ruk khan, chandni chowk kakshay kumar, movies, DON”T GO.

This is a QUALITY Movie, not for Ordinary mass. Those who have BRAIN can watch it and enjoy it.
