Last year that is in 2009 the festival of Janmashtami was observed in the month of August falling on the 14th of the month but this time it is September instead. The Brahmin sect named smartha celebrates this occasion on the 1st of September that is a day before the original occasion. Lord Krishna set foot on earth during the Rohini Nakshatra extending in the Rashi of Vrishabha.
This occasion is referred through various names across India like Shri Krishna Jayanti, Janmashtami, Sree Jayanthi and Gokulashtami but its importance is no less where ever it is celebrated. Devotees observe fasts, chant hymns and blow Conch during the hours of celebration on this eight day of Savana following the full moon period. The idol of lord Krishna is bathed with a mixture called the panchamrit which is later distributed among devotees in the form of a blessing.
The celebration that is marked for two consecutive days is referred to as Krishnashtami on the first and Kalashtami on the second day. After the fasting period is consummated observers offer prayer called”Aarti” in reverence to the lord. Devotees also mark the period with extended chanting of prayers called the mantras and shlokas so that a pious and religious atmosphere can be created during the holy festival.
