The 57th National Film Awards ceremony just concluded today afternoon and left some surprising news for us. Bollywood put up a big fight but it was the Malayalam movie ‘Kutty Srank’ that stole the limelight with 4 national awards.

Directed by Shaji N Karun the film was selected in the following categories: Swarna Kamal Award for Best Film, Best Cinematographer Award to Anjali Shukla, Story & Screenplay Award to PF Mathews and Harikrishnan , Best Costumes Award to Jayakumar & also a special jury award to Sreekar Prasad for his editing work.

Shaji N Karun the director of the film said: “I’m honoured that Kutty Sranku won so many awards in different categories. I feel Mammootty should have got the best actor award for his sincere performance in the film.” But unluckily for him, the veteran Big B of Bollywood beat him to it & walked away with the award for Best Actor.

His performance in Paa seemed to have won the hearts of the jury. This was his 3rd win in the National Film Awards, the earlier awards being for Black in 2005, Agnipath in 1990, as best actor and Saat Hindustani in 1969 as the best newcomer.

Paa was also a winner when it came to best Hindi film & best supporting actress- Arundhuti Nag & best makeup- Christein Tinsley and Dominie Till.

Amir Khan’s 3 Idiots bagged the best lyrics award which went to Swanand Kirkere for his composition ‘Behti hawa sa tha woh’. The movie also won in the popularity category. ‘Well Done Abba’ scored when it came to voicing out social issues. ‘Delhi 6’ won in the national integrity category. Other major awards are-

• Best Actress award went in favour of Ananya Chatterjee for her role in Abohomaan.

• Anjali Shukla For Best Camerawork.

• Resul Pookutty for Best Sound Engineer (Oscar winner)

• Farooq Sheikh for Best Supporting role (Male) in Lahore(also won Indira Gandhi Award for best debut film)

• Rupam Islam for Best Playback singer (Male)

• Niranjana Sarkar for Best Playback singer (Female) in Housefull

• Dev D for Best Music & Best Music Director(Amit Trivedi)

• Best Children’s Film : Ottani Pati and Kesu

• Jiva and Anba Karasu for Best Child actor

• Best Music score: Illyaraza for Pazhassi Raja

• Best Choreography: K Shivashankar in Magadhira

The Swarna Kamal and Rs 2,50,000 each will be given to Kutty Srank ‘s Director Shaji N Karun & Reliance Big Picture. Also Vidhu Vinod Chopra and Raj Kumar Hirani of 3 Idiots will get the Swarna Kamal and Rs 2,00,000 each. Amitabh Bachchan who went on a hat trick in the 57th National Film Awards will be getting the Rajat Kamal and Rs 50,000.

Ramesh Sippy said that the 57th National Film Awards 2010 saw a 2-tierd system of judging with the regional movies being judged initially by a regional jury. The selected films were then reviewed by the central jury. He revealed that out of the many films rejected initially, 5 were recalled & 2 of those 5 even went on to win awards. They were the best film in Marathi-‘Natrang’ & best female playback-‘Houseful’. On the Big B sweeping away with the Best Actor award for the 3rd time, Sippy said that his portrayal of Auro was classic & deserved praise.

Sippy said that there were no tussles while taking decisions-”We did deliberate, but fortunately it was not very difficult. Almost every decision was unanimous”.
