Kashmir employees, government to hold talks Thursday

Civilian killed in army firing, probe ordered

Srinagar/Jammu, April 24 (IANS) A civilian was killed when the army fired at suspected militants in Jammu and Kashmir’s Shopian district Saturday, triggering furious protests that led to the burning of two army vehicles. Authorities said the army has ordered an inquiry.

Two Hizbul militants killed in Jammu-Kashmir gunfight

Jammu, April 24 (IANS) Two militants of the Hizbul Mujaheedin were killed in a gunfight in Jammu and Kashmir’s Doda district, police said Saturday.

‘One militant was killed last (Friday) night while the other early Saturday morning,’ Doda Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Prabhat Singh told IANS.

Separatist guerrillas kill cable operator in Kashmir

Srinagar, April 24 (IANS) Separatist guerrillas shot dead a cable operator in Sopore town of Jammu and Kashmir’s Baramulla district, police said Saturday.

The guerrillas late Friday barged into a house in Khawaja Gilgit locality of Sopore, 54 km from here, and opened fire. Ashiq Hussain Khan, a local cable operator, was critically injured, a senior police officer said.

Till mid-April, India has 19 fresh cases of polio

New Delhi, April 23 (IANS) As many as 19 fresh polio cases have been reported in the country in the last three-and-half months, the Lok Sabha was informed Friday.

Of the 19 reported cases, Uttar Pradesh recorded nine, Bihar six, and Haryana, Maharashtra, West Bengal and Jammu and Kashmir recorded one case each.

Bandh in Jammu for Protesting Against Beheading of Sikhs in Pak

Today a bandh was called by Sikhs to protest against the beheading of 2 associates of the community by Taliban in Pak. They blocked transportation and burnt tyres.

The bandh was called by J & K Sikh United Front and they were supported by BJP, VHP, JKNPP, Jammu Bar Association, Chamber of Commerce and Industry, besides social organizations. [smartads]
